Q: What are the main differences among the three OPPO Up-Converting DVD players?
A: All three OPPO players are excellent DVD players with high definition up-conversion. The DV-981HD emphasizes more on the video performance while the DV-980H and DV-970HD emphasizes more on overall performance and value. The main differences are:

Video Processing Technology:

The DV-981HD features video processing with "DCDi by Faroudja" technology and video chipset by Genesis/Faroudja; the DV-970HD and DV-980H use a different chipset technology for video de-interlacing and up-conversion. While all three players produce excellent picture quality and the difference is subtle, the "DCDi by Faroudja" technology is able to handle some tricky video contents. On very large TV or projector screens, the difference could be noticed by experts or videophiles. When benchmarked with contents designed to test video performance, the DV-981HD will score higher than the DV-970HD and DV-980H.

Output Resolution:

The DV-981HD supports output resolution up to 1080p. If your projector or flat panel TV has a native resolution of 1920x1080 and can accept the 1080p/60 signal, and are looking for excellent PAL playback, the DV-981HD is highly recommended.
The DV-980H supports output resolution up to 1080p. If your rear projection (DLP) TV, projector, or flat panel TV has a native resolution of 1920x1080 and can accept the 1080p/60 signal, the DV-980H is highly recommended.
The DV-970HD supports 480i/576i native SD resolution over HDMI. If you use an external video signal processor with HDMI input the DV-970HD is highly recommended. The DV-970HD will also upscale to 720p and 1080i over HDMI. This makes it a good match for HDTVs with smaller screen size or 720p/1080i resolution.

SACD Playback:

The DV-981HD, DV-970HD, and DV-980H support Super Audio CD (SACD) in addition to DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Audio CD, etc.
Sporting a HDMI 1.2a output, the DV-980H is capable of DSD output over HDMI to an audio/video receiver with DSD decoding.

Convenience Features:

The DV-981HD, DV-970HD and DV-980H features HDMI output for digital video and audio, and are more convenient for connecting to a TV or A/V receiver with HDMI input. All three models can still support HDTV with DVI input via an HDMI-DVI adapter.
The 980H has a USB 2.0 interface. The DV-970HD has a flash memory card reader and USB 1.1 interface. DV-981HD does not support flash memory nor USB.

This was my first transaction with "Only Best Rated" and certainly not my last. I especially appreciated the live support option of which I used more then once. "Leo" was excellent to talk to and answered ALL my burning questions. In fact, I must admit that I asked the same questions more the once. They were always most helpful and, based upon their responses, I purchased the DV-981. The player was mailed out on a Monday and I got it Thursday - awesome.

The DVD player is ... well, what can I say ... everything that I had hoped for in an up-conversion unit. It plays everything that I have put in to it and makes even the scratchiest AVI/VidX files look great. Regular DVDs and video CDs are also fantastic. Audio is perfect. My son, who is a self-proclaimed audio-videophile, cannot believe the quality of the unit - superb.

This was my first transaction with "Only Best Rated".
I put this player up against my LG (progressive scan) using the Davinci Code with the same settings on each input. The Oppo was clearly the better player removing jagged edges especially on curved lines, and in the sharpening of background images. For downloaded divx content the differences were more subtle, but the Oppo appeared more saturated. If you have nothing to compare it to side by side you would probably think there is not much difference than any other dvd player, but head to head it wins out no question.
Incidentally, Only Best Rated provided top notch online service and I will definitely use them again. They responded to my inquiry (after purchasing) within hours and shipped the day they said they would. I will definitely do business again, but wish they had a more extensive product line.

This was my first transaction with "Only Best Rated". Even though I made an error on my mailing address the shipping department did their best to get my Oppo to me as fast as possible. In fact the shipping department always kept me informed as to what was happening. Online tracking was very convenient also. The OPPO DV-981HD has many audio and video features and I am very satisfied with it hooked up to my Samsung LN-T40402H HD TV (you need the latest firmware for this TV from Samsung). Only Best Rated was the single Canadian retailer for the Oppo line on the Internet that I found.

First time buying from this company, and is definitely top notch in customer service. My 981 was shipped immediately and arrived in perfect condition.
The unit is quite well make and is a classy looking piece of equipment. Remote is better than the average player as well.
This player is very easy to set up and was producing upscaled 1080p within minutes. It certainly makes a noticeable improvement over std. definition progressive scan. Well worth the money for that alone.
A few years back when SACD was first starting to be promoted, I picked up Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon in this format for something like $6.00. Playing it in my dedicated 2 channel system, which is higher end than the average, it sounded about the same as the original 2 channel Red Book cd release.
Today I remembered I had it and listened to it on my HT system over the OPPO. Man, it is incredible how it sounds. I never knew many of those details even existed in this recording. Simply unbelievable the detail and ambiance.
I\'d just like to finish by saying if this company carries the product that suits my needs, they\'ll get first pass on my business.

Firstly i would like to say I am extremly impressed by the whole buying experince from these guys....I ordered at 11am on a Thursday morning and had my brand spanking new upconverting 981hd player at 11am Monday morning....Secondly...this dvd player is simply outstanding...I am blown away by its upconverting capabilities...I am running it using HDMI through a HDTV 57in Rear projection tv capable of 1080i output....i returned my xbox hd payer (although i was using it through component cables) and im so glad I did...i put on "Sahara" last nite as my first test subject on the Oppo and the picture was amazing...I did a lot of reviews on dvd players and even though i was slightly sceptical about a brand I hadnt heard of before i decided to believe the rave reviews and take the plunge....great price...great service...great product....another delighted customer !!!!
