I love movies. Lots of movies. So when I accumulated a vast collection ,I was constantly swapping out collection case after collection case, misplacing, scratching, and losing. Basically a constant clutter and confusion. There had to be a better way! Well, here it is. The MediaGate MG-35 is the solution.

It was easy to assemble, and transfer files. And now, I have a neat organized server which works extremely well. The functions and remote are well placed and organized, as well as your set-up options. I tried other items in this group, and found them nosey, but not the MediaGate MG-35. All you hear is the hard drive, if you strain to hear it in quiet sections of a movie or during selections. Most new TV's are noisier.

I would be hard pressed to spend more, unless you need SATA or HDMI, because this unit goes to 1080i, which is more than the typical media installed. Speaking of which, I havant found much that doss not play on this unit. So, If your looking for a media player that’s better than this, get ready to spend some big bucks!

I picked up the unit about 3 months ago. I used it mainly to play DVD saved on the hard drive and NAS. It stopped working recently. I was concern that I may have to send it away for warranty service. Onlybestrated stands behind their product and exchanged the unit with no hassle. I am totally satisfied with the customer service.

This is an initial review of the MG-35 NDAS. After some quick research on media HD's my decision to buy the MG was based on price, availability and features - in that order. I am satisfied with OBR and although the price went down $10 a week after I bought it, I still feel I got a pretty good deal.

As for the unit itself, not the most expensive design. You have a $300 unit (MG + HD) teetering on top of a $0.25 plastic holder. One false move and the whole thing can come crashing down. HD installation was as easy as you can get. The remote is not fantastic but is very good.

The real pain for me is networking this thing with my home network. OBR tech support assured me that the MG would work with my PC and my iBook thru a Netgear router. That was not a lie but easier said than done. I am no IT guru by any means so I deferred to the manual. That was a mistake - the manual is virtually useless in that regard. The MG connects without a problem to my TV and works as advertised. But it seems to "disconnect" itself from the network on occasion which requires either a reboot of the PC or a soft reset of the MG. Also I had to format the HD installed in the MG using NTFS in order to properly deal with 500 GB. Although the Mac can read/write to the HD when connected thru the network, with NTFS it can only read & not write when connected via USB which is the preferred method of file transfer because of speed.

So the unit gets 3.5/5 and the networking part 2/5.

I got this with reservation for my hubby. Not familiar with these products or this site but was very pleased with the results on both fronts.
Ordering was easy. Payment easier. Received a great item in no time at all and my hubby LOVED it. Works like a charm. Some of the defaults are annoying but I am sure there are work arounds. It is sleek and user friendly. Pretty blue light on the front which can be turned off to not annoy. If considering this item, take it from a novice, it is as good as it sounds!

I would disagree with the above statement. In my opinion the player very well performs at what it is supposed to do. In fact the OS of the host computer is irrelevant, and in particular yes you can interface with MacOS.

I am a movie lover and I just got my MG-35 (150$) and I installed a 300GB Maxtor hard drive (extra 100$) on it. I really like it and it works pretty fine with windows XP. It doesn't have any problem playing my Divx, Xvid and mp3 files. It also plays back JPG files.

I also tried it over the network with my wireless lan at home, by sharing my picture folder on my pc which is connect to wireless network and reading it with MG-35 which is connected with wired to my lan. It works fairly well with my wireless b (11Mbps) network for streaming mp3 and jpg but if you are planning to used it with wireless network and watch movies I recommand wireless g (54Mbps) routerns. It also palysback mp3 files while watching jpg pictures which is quit a nice feature. For those of you who have high definition tv MG-35 supports both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio and upconverts the videos through component cable which doesn't come with the package and you need to order it separately. The remote looks a bit cheap but its functionality is good enough.

I'm glad that I didn't buy a dvd player that supports divx and xvid and upconverts (80$-150$) and I went for MG-35 instead. Eventhough it seems cheaper to buy a dvd player rather than a product like this but in long term even assuming your dvds will last forever (which they don't and most of them will go bad in a year or two and you will lose your data) the money that you pay for your dvds and the time you spend to keep them organized doesn't even worth it.

For those of you who are a bit familiar with PC and windows I really recommand this product.
