Holy firmware updates batman! I believe there were four separate updates, and they were applied in sequence by the player, for a total of 30-40 minutes to fully update the player. Thankfully, each had a fairly detailed changelog, so I could see what new features were coming down the pipe for each.
This player *loves* to crash if you don't treat it with baby gloves. For instance, if I just power off (on the remote), instead of stopping the media, there's a 50/50 chance the player will lock up requiring a hard restart. Not a big issue, just hit stop first, but one of many small quirks that took some getting used to.
Also, a major concern - it appears there is an issue with some DVD menus, on genuine DVD movies, no less! I popped in my Stargate SG1 season 7 DVD's and found to my surprise that the DVD menu's did not display properly - when you selected "episodes", and it would normally move to the next page, the player would not change the background, but would hichlight where the text was *supposed* to be (i.e., the player had moved to the next menu but had not actually *displayed* the menu). Very disconcerting for this to happen to "real" DVD content.
On the whole, however, I *am* happy with the system. It is capable of playing a LOT of content, although I haven't quite figured out how to point to multiple shares yet, short of placing a shortcut to each within the "main" folder. I assume there's another method I am missing.

Submited By: Stacey Goodfield on 12/03/2005 An amazing player! Took awhile to get all firmware updates but was an easy process. Unit works like a charm and plays EVERYTHING I have thrown at it. Have noticed some slight stuttering on occassion on some 1080i content but it is minimal. player is WORTH EVERY PENNY and then some. No need for a HTPC now unless you plan on doing alot of recording and then I would suggest DVD with Large Hard Drive.

Submited By: Gary Abramszyk on 10/17/2005 What an awesome networked dvd player! I've read all the reviews/threads/discussions possible in the last month and a half and they are all pretty positive. Compared with the Buffalo Link, this one beats it handsdown! I have used this extensively over the last 2 months and it does pretty well everything I need it to do. I've hooked up two computers to it now (it handles more), using one as my jukebox and the other as a TIVO. I can watch a programme while it's still recording it - the possibilities are endless. At this price, handling HD-DVDs and upconverting, it's a NO-BRAINER! And besides, these are great people at ONLY BEST RATED - Awesome Customer Service! Thank you OBR! And thank you IO Data! What a great experience...

Submited By: Ludovic Olivencia on 06/13/2005 Excellent Product!!!
First you have to update with last firmware (03/06/2005), but it's so easy to do that, you have just to go to setup menu and select Update!! it's all!
It read now ALL TS !!! even up to 35Mbits/s very smoothly!
Reading Wmw 720p/1080p work very well too!! and wma pro (5.1) too!
Browsing photos stored on your computer is really cool and listening Radio among 400 availables is really superb (using Vtuner access)!
DVD's are upscaled to HDTV resolution, and result is incredible!!! a lot better than with my PC and FFDshow trick!
you have access to a Portal on the net using Remote controler, it's really cool.
THANKS IODATA.

Submited By: Chris Stelzer on 06/07/2005 An amazing player! I had a lot of problems with .TS MPEG2 High Definition playback, but guess what, they released a new firmware as of June 3 that fixed everything BEAUTIFULLY!!!
1080i MPEG2 HD .TS Files play so well it's amazing, full FF and RW capability even jump to percentage, you can even burn multiple .TS files to a DVD drop it in the cd tray and play High Definition right from the DVD! Who needs to wait for HD-DVD's when you can have it now!
I fully recommend this player to anyone looking into getting a home theater pc, DON'T this player will do it all! Pictures as well!!! If you get a diffrent web sever software you can even have a simple web browser!!
Winamp playlists and even shoutcast streams! All to this player without a hitch! What are you waiting for, click the "Add to cart" button now!

Submited By: Peter WOlf on 02/21/2005 Cool player. Plays everything. I recently noticed that its codecs are upgradable: the player accessed the internet and downloaded the latest stuff from the vendor's server... all by a single click on the remote.
Highly recommended!

Submited By: Martin Hall on 02/12/2005 Amazing player. I had a HTPC before...gosh what a headache! Sure it worked ok but there was a keyboard, mouse, a large and loud computer case. The biggest downside was ofcourse that no one could figure out how to use it except me. This player is such a relief because if you can navigate a DVD menu, you can play computer files off the network. So it gets some use from the women in the house. Plays everything ive tried so far. Glad I found this or I would have bought the D-Link DSM320 which I would loathe as it is the buggiest product that I can think of.
Highly recommended

Submited By: Tony Petrilli on 01/25/2005 This player is fantastic. It has played everything I threw at it without issue.
It has a couple of odd quirks, but easy to live with. The network adaptor in the unit is not the most responsive to things like pings but this does not seem to be an issue duing playback of server hosted files.
The software that you must put on a PC to stream files only allows the player to see supported file types, which is supposed to include Mpeg 2 transport Stream files, but they do not show up. Renaming the .TS files to MPG solves this & the player plays them perfectly.
Although the manual does mention the ability to read .VOB files directly, it is also capable of fully reading a VIDEO_TS structure from USB or network. Just navigate to it, higlight the VIDEO_TS.IFO file within the directory and voila, the image will play as if it were a true dvd disc.
High def xvid/divx content plays fantastic.
I have set the system up with svideo & component cables and the player adjusts all content to your chosen output.
The remote could be a bit better as it is a little small, but that is a very minor issue.
I would recommend this to anyone 270$ US or 325$ CDN buring a hole in their pocket!
